Places to drink in and around Nieuwmarkt (Where Amsterdam Escape is based)

The De Bekeerde Suster (The twisted sister)  / Micro Brewery.
Our Brendan's second home. Huge bar and Restaurant selling great beer and good food.  Staff very friendly and some a little crazy but all in good fun.

Cafe Cuba (3 Nieuwmarkt Square)
A great local bar always busy.  Has a real Cuban feel to it. Done up in fifties Havana style with Hemingway pictures, rum adverts and cane furniture. Famous for its large selection of cocktails, at reasonable prices. Large outdoor terrace during summer, with a nice view of the hustle and bustle on Nieuwmarkt square and inside you have a pool table

And next door to the Cafe Cuba is another famous spot

The Cotton Club, another very busy bar with a large summer terrace
Cotton Club (5 Nieuwmarkt Square)
Travel back to the 20's. The Cotton Club where the temperature is warm,
the shows are hot, the ladies are sexy and the crowd just loves to dance.
The only thing that’s cold in here is the whisky… eh tea!.

A very relaxed bar to sit and enjoy a drink or during the
summer a large seated terrace is a great spot to sit and
enjoy Nieuwmarkt square and do some people watching.

Casablanca - Zeedijk 26 ( Street running off Nieuwmarkt Square)
Live Jazz music most nights.  Dinner and a live show other nights.

Gerrit van Beeren,
Koningstraat 54,Just off Nieuwmarkt
This place is a local classic, you can also eat here as it is
an "eetcafe." Great food and nice surroundings.
Booking in advance a must.

Cafe Bern - Nieuwmarkt 9, Nieuwmarkt, Amsterdam, 1011 JR The Netherlands
Fondue with a twist. World Famous Fondue. This looks like just another bar - not the sort of place you would go for a good dinner but trust us you are in for a real treat, if you like fondue. Reviews - click here  Booking in advance a must.

A little further down from Nieuwmarkt is Cafe de Doelen at Kloveniersburgwal 125
Sitting on the corner with Staalstraat and has a sign 'Oorlam' above the door. Very popular place with a nice mix of people, many students and a good selection of beers.
Classic brown bar in Amsterdam hidden away from main tourist area but not too hidden.Nice staff and anything could happen next...and does! No food served here but you can order the local sausage, all sliced up for you to dip in mustard on a small plate.
