Allard Pierson Museum Amsterdam
The archeological museum of the University of Amsterdam.
The Ancient civilisations of ancient Egypt, the Greek World, Eturia and the Roman Empire are all revived here. Art-objects and utensils, dating back to 4000 B.C. and give's a good impression of everyday-life, mythology and religion in Antiquity. There are also several scale models of ancient temples and buildings. In the Ancient Egypt department there is a room dedicated to death with mummies, sarcophagi and film showing the process of mummifaction. The plastercast-attic which can only be visited by guided tour, shows copies of world-famous Roman and Greek statues. Every year two or three temporary exhibitions are organized.
The displays are worth a visit, it begins with the ancient Egyptians and includes several mummies (if you have never seen one this is your chance),, several scale models of the pyramids of Giza and the temple of Edfu. You can enter you name into a computer and see in appear in hieroglyphs.
The section devoted to the Geek's describes the colonisation of Italy with its influence Etruscan on civilization.. The Etruscans lived in the region now know as Tuscany in Italy around (900-675 B.C.).
Since the Museums beginnings back in 1934, the museum's collection as well as the buildings itself have grown considerably, moving in 1976 to it's present location but with a large extension added
in 1994 to house the ever increasing collection.
The Museum gained it's name from the first professor of classical archaeology Allard Pierson who was the first professor of archaeology at Amsterdam university.

Wheel chair accessible well as parking for disabled persons. Note, parking around the area can be hard to find , best reached on a tram on lines 4, 9, 16, 24 and 25).
There is a good shop at the museum which sells all sorts of items , even some replicas of the exhibits can be bought as well as books, magazines, postcards are for sale
